Ecosystem services are the benefits that people receive from nature in the form of food, water, biodiversity, recreation, and natural disaster control. They can be tangible, such as food and wood, or intangible, such as stress reduction and spiritual renewal. The third, cultural, encompasses those non-material benefits of the natural world, such as recreational and spiritual value. The final, supporting, covers those ecological processes that support the provisioning, regulating and cultural services such as carbon sequestration, water filtration, and crop fertilization.

Evaluating ecosystem services can be difficult, especially when the evaluator is trying to determine their economic value. To help with this, several tools are available to assist in the monetary valuation of environmental services. In the latter, research is still needed to identify the specific parameters that are involved and to determine how they affect human well-being. These parameters include biotic and abiotic characteristics, the type of ecosystem studied and the methods used to evaluate/quantify/map ES. In addition, it is important to consider the scale of ES and whether they are local or global in scope.
