Tropical forests provide various environmental services, including water purification, climate balance, soil fertility, and biodiversity conservation. However, the market often undervalues these natural ecosystem processes.
Ecosystem services are the benefits that people receive from nature in the form of food, water, biodiversity, recreation, and natural disaster control. They can be tangible, such as food and wood, or intangible, such as stress reduction and spiritual renewal. An ecosystem is a network of living organisms and their abiotic environment in a specific place that interact with each other in a dynamic process that results in a balance of matter and energy. These interactions are often invisible, but they are vital to our survival.
Ecological processes such as plant growth, bacteria decomposition, animal pollination, and soil erosion are examples of environmental services. These processes are usually free of charge, but they provide crucial support to our economy and health. They can also be regulated by human activities, such as agricultural, industrial, and urban land use. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment identified four categories of ecosystem services: provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting.
The first category, provisioning, includes those services that provide humans with the things they need for survival, such as food, water, and wood. The second, regulating, refers to those ecological processes that moderate natural phenomena such as climate change, flood control, and soil erosion. The third, cultural, encompasses those non-material benefits of the natural world, such as recreational and spiritual value. The final, supporting, covers those ecological processes that support the provisioning, regulating and cultural services such as carbon sequestration, water filtration, and crop fertilization.
Evaluating ecosystem services can be difficult, especially when the evaluator is trying to determine their economic value. To help with this, several tools are available to assist in the monetary valuation of environmental services. These include a worksheet to think through the key considerations of an ecosystem service project, and an inventory that allows users to search for and download valuation studies that focus on a particular ecosystem.
Another valuable tool is the EPA’s Ecoregion Mapping and GIS Resources. This web-based resource provides information on a wide range of ecosystem services in different regions of the country. It can help communities incorporate local ecosystem services into their planning and decision-making. The resource also provides information on the type, quality, and quantity of environmental services in each region.
Regulating Services
Environmental services safeguard and optimize the land, water, and air at sites by restoring their qualitative functions. They clean up pollution from industrial sites, protect ecosystems and natural resources, and provide waste management solutions. They also ensure regulatory compliance and help companies obtain the necessary permits to operate. These services are important for businesses that want to expand into different nations and geographical areas. Without the help of an expert, a company could face fines and negative publicity for noncompliance.
Regulating services, which moderate natural events, are the most important service to people. Examples of these services include flood regulation, climate regulation, disease and pest regulation, biodiversity conservation, water purification, soil erosion control, and carbon sequestration. These services are difficult to evaluate or map, but they are important for human well-being.
In the urban ecosystem, regulating services are more studied than other landscape types. These include services that regulate the urban heat island effect, maintain city water supply and sanitation systems, and provide green space for recreation and physical health. However, regulating services in other ecosystems are not as well understood. Forests, sea and marine ecosystems, grazing lands, and wetlands need scientific studies to identify and map their regulating services.
For example, when a hospital worker disinfects a room, they sanitize the surfaces that people touch, such as sinks and doorknobs. They don’t just wipe down the counters and empty trashcans, though; they go further by using a special technique that prevents cross-contamination. They also put on a gown, mask, and gloves to avoid spreading germs to unclean areas.
The Environmental Services Department provides a wide range of consumer and environmental health safety inspections for food, child care, public swimming pools, solid waste collection and recycling, animal care, litter management and stormwater. They partner with the community to advance sanitary landfill operations, waste disposal strategies, and recycling programs, as well as provide education on environmental issues. They also manage two wastewater treatment plants, 45 pumping stations, and over 700 miles of sewer pipe.
Regulating Processes
Environmental Services technicians use cleaning and disinfection techniques to ensure that a workplace remains safe and clean for all employees and visitors. They may perform tasks like mopping, sweeping and dusting as well as restocking supplies, washing surfaces and disinfecting high-traffic areas. The role is expected to grow in popularity as the focus shifts from managing environmental issues after they occur to preventing them altogether.
According to the EPA, environmental services are a group of activities that prevent or reduce pollution and contamination on sites to protect the environment and human health. They include identifying and monitoring potential contaminants, assessing the impact of those contaminants on ecosystems and humans, and developing and implementing prevention measures. They also offer support to businesses and organizations in their compliance efforts and ensure that environmental regulations are followed.
The most obvious of environmental services are the provisioning ones: food, wood and water that we can harvest from the world around us. But the broader category of ecosystem processes that provide benefits for humanity includes regulating, cultural and supporting services.
For example, wetlands help control floods by acting as sponges to soak up excess water; trees act as filters to purify air and soil of pollutants; and pollination provides the basis for provisioning services like crop production. Other regulating services include disease and pest regulation, as well as erosion prevention by bankside vegetation, reed beds, wetlands and riparian zones.
Research on ecosystem services is relatively young, but already a number of important findings are being published. Several studies have grouped ES into three categories: final ES like climate regulation and natural hazard regulation; primary or intermediate ES such as pollination, disease and pest regulation and erosion control; and support services such as nutrient cycling. In the latter, research is still needed to identify the specific parameters that are involved and to determine how they affect human well-being. These parameters include biotic and abiotic characteristics, the type of ecosystem studied and the methods used to evaluate/quantify/map ES. In addition, it is important to consider the scale of ES and whether they are local or global in scope.
Regulatory Compliance
As a result of growing consumer awareness and environmental regulations, companies need to comply with guidelines set out by government agencies. Whether they are in the energy sector, waste management or any other industry, businesses must adhere to environmental regulatory compliance measures, which aim to reduce their impact on the environment and preserve natural resources. Failure to do so could result in fines, penalties, or other repercussions. It can also harm a company’s reputation, deter ethical investors, and influence customers to choose other brands that are socially responsible.
Regulatory compliance is an ongoing process that requires constant monitoring and reporting. Fortunately, there are several tools available to streamline the process. For example, cloud-based EHS solutions provide a platform for coordinating, managing and automating sustainability and compliance efforts. This ensures that organizations stay up-to-date on their regulatory obligations across global locations and reduces operational risks.
The environmental services sector covers many different areas, including sewage, refuse disposal and sanitation, air pollution prevention and mitigation, noise abatement and nature and landscape protection services. Currently, WTO members’ level of commitments in this sector is modest. As of 1 December 2020, 52 WTO members had made commitments in sewage services and 51 had committed to other environmental services (the latter falling under the non-infrastructure category of the Provisional CPC).
Career opportunities for those who work in these sectors are expected to grow as public health concerns continue to rise. As a result, more professionals will be needed to focus on preventing issues rather than controlling them after the fact.
Hospitals are a good example of how these services are being used to reduce infections and maintain patient safety. Cleaning and disinfection teams are the unsung heroes of healthcare facilities, helping to keep germs from spreading and maintaining staff and customer safety.
Providing environmental services to both public and private entities helps to prevent health hazards and promote sustainable development and resource management. The sector encompasses a wide range of activities and industries, from waste management to environmental monitoring, and provides jobs for a diverse workforce. As a result, it is critical that it continues to evolve and adapt with the times in order to remain relevant and productive.
